Born in Morelia, Mexico, in 1974, Omar studied biology at Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo and did his postgraduate work at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico, Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales, España, and University of Toronto. He is a senior researcher at Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo, Faculty of Biology. He works with evolutionary biology, biogeography, systematics, and conservation of fish and freshwater resources. He has 160 published research articles and has graduated 66 graduate and postgraduate students. He is responsible for different projects for the conservation and reintroduction of extinct species in nature, including the Fish Ark Mexico Project. He is part of the UICN Freshwater Fish Specialist Group and a scientific advisor in several Natural Protected Areas and conservation organizations. In addition, he has 5 biologists in his immediate family.
